> On a gray, humid Saturday morning in central Florida, a little under a dozen people gathered outside the Spring Hill Branch Library to protest the construction of a hyperscale data center in their community. There was no immediate threat — the Hernando County commission had unanimously approved a one-year moratorium on such developments in June — but the organizers weren’t satisfied. A temporary pause wouldn’t be enough. They wanted a ban. “We are going to fight, fight, fight,” said a 71-year-old woman named Carol, who was manning a table with flyers and a petition the group, No Data Centers Hernando County, planned on presenting to the local government. Carol, a retired country music radio host, is a staunch conservative and a proud Floridian. The American flag on her red T-shirt was made up of little sea turtles. A white visor, bedazzled with red and blue rhinestones, shielded her face from the late-morning sun. “How would you like to have one by you? If you live within 15 minutes of a data center, night and day you’re going to hear: EEEEENNNNNNHHHHHHHHHHHH.” Beyond the noise pollution and environmental destruction — the frequencies emitted by data centers, she told me, hurt bees and...

> IIn March, Meta’s Oversight Board called on the company to “meet its public commitments and employ its own tools” to help quell the spread of deceptive generative AI content across platforms. Meta responded in July by introducing Content Seal — an invisible watermarking technology that flags images generated by the company’s new AI model. But it was basically a footnote buried in the company’s announcement for its Muse image and video generation tools. As someone who spends a lot of time scrutinizing AI labeling systems, Content Seal doesn’t fill me with confidence. There are already more established solutions, like C2PA Content Credentials and Google’s SynthID, that Meta could have used instead of launching its own system significantly later. After digging around to figure out why Meta has launched its own system, I’m not convinced that Meta has thought this through. By Meta’s description, Content Seal works similarly to SynthID. The watermark, invisible to human eyes, provides a “hidden provenance signal” embedded into AI-generated images that can then be scanned and flagged by a detection tool, helping online users to differentiate deepfakes from authentic content. Like SynthID, Meta also says that Content Seal watermarks remain intact and can still be detected...

**[Google launches a cheaper alternative to large AI security models like Mythos](https://www.theverge.com/tech/968572/google-gemini-flash-cyber-ai-security-model)**
> Google is launching an AI security model dedicated to quickly finding and patching security vulnerabilities. In a blog post on Tuesday, Google describes Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber as a “cost-efficient and highly capable alternative” to larger, more expensive AI systems, such as the one offered by Anthropic’s Mythos. The new model is built upon Gemini 3.5 Flash and will be available first to governments and trusted partners via CodeMender, Google’s security-focused coding agent. As noted by Google, CodeMender can call upon 3.5 Flash Cyber “multiple times at high speed and low cost,” allowing the AI agents to scan more code paths and find vulnerabilities. Anthropic’s Mythos 5 is a powerful AI security model released as part of the company’s Project Glasswing initiative. The compute-heavy model is expensive to use, costing twice as much as Claude Opus 4.8. Microsoft, which adopted Mythos for its security checks, had its biggest Patch Tuesday this month after using AI to find vulnerabilities. Other companies, like Google, are racing to keep up, while China’s Z.ai claims its model can compete with Mythos. Google says 3.5 Flash Cyber achieved “competitive performance” compared to “significantly larger models” on the CyberGym AI cybersecurity benchmark when called upon up...

> Today, I’m talking with Harvard professor and New Yorker staff writer Dr. Jill Lepore about her new book, The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State, which comes out on August 25. Jill is one of the best writers there is at identifying institutional patterns in history, and Decoder is a show about systems, so this book could not possibly be more in our zone. You build systems by measuring things — gathering information, quantifying it as data, and taking action on it. And Jill’s big thesis in the book is that this kind of systemic measurement is really a dehumanizing act, one that flattens human concerns into something, well, artificial. These artificial structures touch everything — not just in the more obvious places like in apps or AI, but all the way up to politics and governance itself, and Jill’s insights here are a telling portrait of the way Big Tech and its billionaire figureheads have managed to break the very idea of the state itself. Verge subscribers, don’t forget you get exclusive access to ad-free Decoder wherever you get your podcasts. Head here. Not a subscriber? You can sign up here. You’ll hear Jill tell me she wanted...

**[China delivers a one-two punch to America's AI dominance](https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/967781/chinese-ai-models-open-source-moonshot-kimi-k3-alibaba-qwen)**
> China’s leading AI companies are ramping up the pressure on Silicon Valley, as Moonshot and Alibaba unveiled models they claim can go toe-to-toe with the best from OpenAI and Anthropic at a fraction of the cost. The rapid-fire releases suggest America’s lead at the AI frontier is increasingly tight, just as the technology is becoming central to national security, economic power, and geopolitical influence. The opening salvo came from Beijing-based Moonshot AI, one of China’s leading AI model developers, which unveiled Kimi K3 on Friday. Moonshot claims its own testing ranks it consistently above nearly every US system, trailing only OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol and Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5, though it came out ahead on certain benchmarks. Over the weekend, Chinese tech behemoth Alibaba followed with a preview of Qwen3.8, a new model it says is ‘one of the most powerful model[s] available today” and “second only to Fable 5,” Anthropic’s flagship model. Both companies are emphasizing a key difference from the leading US labs: rather than locking their most advanced models behind closed doors, they are making them publicly available. While some US companies, most notably Meta, have taken a similar approach, releasing models that developers can freely download, modify,...

**[The war on 'woke science' comes for space research](https://www.theverge.com/science/966711/omb-grant-science-space-nasa-planetary-society)**
> The Trump administration is waging a culture war on science, and the latest salvo is in the form of a dry, bureaucratic proposal from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) that could threaten the future of US science as we know it. The proposal would give political appointees unprecedented control over grant funding, the method through which scientists receive federal money to perform groundbreaking space research such as the search for evidence of organic compounds on Mars or the discovery of some of the earliest galaxies in the universe. A typical proposed rule from the OMB garners less than 100 public comments. This rule has netted over 500,000 comments, the large majority of which appear to be negative, including a response from respected nonprofit The Planetary Society, which has criticized everything from the proposal’s rules around publication to its move away from peer review to its chilling effect on scientists in every field. “Nearly every proposed aspect of these rule changes has some deleterious or negative consequence for the practice of science,” Casey Dreier, chief of space policy at The Planetary Society, tells The Verge. “There’s concrete harm, even if you’re not a scientist,” he points out. The biggest...

> Today on Decoder, we’ve got the first of a two-part series on the systems that run the world: I’m talking with Bart Butler, the CTO of Proton, the company that makes private and secure productivity software. You probably know it best for Proton Mail, which is encrypted by default, but the company also has docs, sheets, a calendar, and even a new AI assistant called Lumo, all built and marketed around the idea that they should be vastly more private than the products from Big Tech companies. You’ll hear Bart say pretty plainly that the thing Proton sells, at a high level, isn’t really the products themselves, but actually trust. And trust in the software world isn’t only about the people who run the companies, but also the technology they develop and sell and the corporate structure in place to make sure that technology is built against the right incentives. Pure Decoder bait, in other words. The challenge is that Bart also says part of Proton’s mission is very much to succeed at being a viable competitor to Big Tech, and that means the company has to grow and expand to competitive scale, all while preserving its core values. This...

How it started Years before the AI boom threatened local power grids, a small group of protesters set the stage for the battles cropping up across communities today. In 2015, Apple announced plans to build a roughly $1 billion data center in the sleepy town of Athenry, Ireland. The data center’s 500-acre site would power Apple’s services in Europe, including iTunes, iMessage, and Siri. At the time, Apple said the data center would offer outdoor education spaces, walking trails, and an initiative to replant native trees. It would also use 100 percent renewable energy. With the approval from the local government and plans to give back to the community, Apple likely didn’t anticipate the lengthy battle it was about to face. Apple’s building plans were quickly derailed after Irish residents lodged complaints to the country’s independent planning board about the expected noise, light pollution, flooding, traffic, and impact on local wildlife. While the board ultimately approved...

> This is Optimizer, a weekly newsletter sent from Verge senior reviewer Victoria Song that dissects and discusses the latest gizmos and potions that swear they’re going to change your life. Opt in for Optimizer here. Europe is melting, the eastern US is currently trapped in a “heat dome,” the Midwest has the corn sweats to look forward to, and if you’ve never felt the oppressive, sticky misery of monsoon season in Asia — consider yourself blessed. But as folks duke it out on social media about who has it hotter (and whether air conditioning is ethical), it’s time to address a nonnegotiable truth of surviving summer: hydration. Surely, staying hydrated isn’t a controversial topic. Something as simple as drinking water can’t possibly be twisted by the wellness wild west. But alas, a recent TikTok search proved me wrong. “Sometimes water alone just isn’t enough,” an influencer named Grace, a “holistic nutritionist,” says in a partnership video with Liquid IV. She mixes a packet in, stirring with an aesthetic glass straw while spitting general truths about why electrolytes are important. “It’s about what your body does with the water that matters.” Next, I was blasted with a clip of actress Mayim...

> Over the past week, a new fanworks movement has kicked off, with the aim to root out authors using generative AI. But the detection methods being implemented are questionable, and any fanfic writer could be caught in the crossfire. Broad distaste around the use of Claude, ChatGPT, and other AI tools has long been a thing in creative communities, including the world of fanfiction. Readers and writers have passed around tips for spotting supposedly AI-generated works, citing anything from em dashes to the broad concept of purple prose. But on June 29th, an anonymous X account called @heatedrivalryai promised a seemingly more reliable solution. It posted a skin — similar to an extension — for the popular fanfic repository Archive of Our Own (AO3) that would purportedly identify coding artifacts left behind by Anthropic’s Claude bot. “When a Claude-generated response is pasted directly into AO3 from Claude, the text is wrapped by a Claude-injected code ‘font-claude-response-body,’” said the @heatedrivalryai account. “Its presence indicates the use of Claude definitively.” When a user visits a page (like a work of fanfic) with this code, the skin turns the entire background red. Several test posts have been published to AO3 that allow users...

> At the event “The Briefing: AI for Science” earlier this week, Anthropic announced Claude Science, a new “AI workbench for scientists” that pulls fragmented tools and datasets into one environment, and generates figures and visuals. Anthropic, already dominating the industry with its popular coding tools and powerful AI models, framed the launch around what it says is AI’s potential to “dramatically accelerate the pace of scientific discovery and the development of healthcare interventions,” and touted a long list of biotech and pharma customers already using Claude. Anthropic also went a step further, saying it would develop drugs of its own. Head of life sciences Eric Kauderer-Abrams said the company will focus on discovering treatments for “neglected” diseases. AI companies have been eager to court science and pharma customers — OpenAI, Amazon, Google, and others have their own life sciences tools and platforms. But Anthropic’s planned move is one of the most direct public attempts by a major frontier AI company to actually develop drugs itself. It puts it in the unusual position of selling software to other, potentially competing drugmakers. Anthropic joins a broader race that includes AI-first drug companies like Insilico, Google DeepMind spinout Isomorphic Labs, biotech startups, and...

> This is Lowpass by Janko Roettgers, a newsletter on the ever-evolving intersection of tech and entertainment, syndicated just for The Verge subscribers once a week. “AI is the new frontier for us,” says Marc DeBevoise, who took over as the new CEO of OverDrive last week. OverDrive is best known for the ebook lending app Libby that is available through tens of thousands of public libraries. Like the rest of the digital publishing industry, it’s poised to face massive disruption from a huge wave of AI-generated books. To prepare for the AI onslaught, Libby is now getting ready to introduce AI content controls, allowing readers to select in the app’s settings whether they want to see AI-generated content or not. This includes not only AI authorship, but also AI-narrated audiobooks, machine translation, and AI-generated art. “We need to tell people what’s available [and] how it was created,” DeBevoise says. With the app’s new AI filters, OverDrive tries to strike a middle ground between allowing readers and librarians to opt out of AI and embracing what DeBevoise thinks are the technology’s upsides in areas like content recommendations and localization. (Libby first introduced some AI features of its own last year to...

> A sneaky rule change has the potential to blow up scientific research in the United States. But there’s still time to fight it. On May 29th, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued a 412-page proposal to revise federal financial assistance. The language is a combination of distinctly Trumpian attacks on “woke” policies and boring governmentese designed to make your eyes glaze over as quickly as possible. But under phrases like “providing further clarification on the regulatory status of the OMB requirements” is something darker — a threat to scientific research in this country, the livelihoods of thousands of scientists, and the lives of millions of vulnerable people. If this rule change goes forward, science in the US “will stop,” says Colette Delawalla, the founder and CEO of Stand Up for Science. “It won’t exist anymore.” But OMB must look at — and address — all substantive public comments, and the rule change remains open for comments until July 13th. Another route also has potential. If Congress submits an objection, it’s possible the rule change would not go forward. The rule change would require political oversight of more than $1 trillion of federal grants across 42 different agencies. Federal...

> Just days after a gunman killed conservative activist Charlie Kirk, it became clear that President Donald Trump would use the assassination to fuel a crackdown on free speech. To avenge Kirk’s death, the administration vowed to go after so-called “antifa” (otherwise known as antifascist) terrorists. Now that promise is bearing fruit. This week, eight Texas activists were sentenced to between 30 and 100 years in prison — one for attempted murder, but most for supposedly belonging to an insurrectionary “Antifa cell,” including one sentenced to 30 years in part for moving a box of zines. These unusually harsh sentences are a major victory for the Trump administration, one that will likely serve as a blueprint for targeting activists across the US. The emboldened administration has quickly celebrated them. In a statement, acting attorney general Todd Blanche said that the sentences show that the law will come down hard on “Antifa terrorists who attack law enforcement and federal facilities.” But many of those sentenced did no such thing. The Texas cases concern a July 4th, 2025 protest outside the Prairieland Detention Facility in Alvarado, Texas. Roughly a dozen protesters set off fireworks and shouted messages in Spanish through a bullhorn. Then...

> Netflix, A24, Focus Features, and Warner Bros.’ Clockwork have all reportedly decided to pass on picking up Artificial — director Luca Guadagnino’s new biographical drama about OpenAI cofounder / CEO Sam Altman — for distribution deals. And while Neon and Mubi are still said to be interested in the film, this situation makes it seem like Hollywood no longer has the courage to tell critical stories about Big Tech. Postproduction on Artificial was nearly finished when Amazon MGM unexpectedly announced last week that it no longer plans to distribute the film. The news came as a surprise given how far along the movie was and reports that Amazon initially intended to give it a short, Oscar-qualifying theatrical run some time later this year. Artificial was also reportedly scheduled for a wider release in early 2027 and a showing at the SXSW Film & TV Festival, but those plans are now dead in the water. Though Amazon hasn’t gone into detail about why it dropped Artificial, the company told Deadline that it felt the film would be “better served if it were released by a different studio.” While Neon or Mubi could ultimately be better homes for the project, Amazon’s decision...

> On today’s episode of Decoder, my guest is Hayden Field, senior AI reporter for The Verge. Often when Hayden comes on the show, it’s because something has gone wrong in the world of AI. Last weekend, that something was a pretty intense mix of Anthropic, the Trump administration, and Anthropic’s new AI model, Fable 5. On Friday, not even a week since Anthropic released Fable to the public, the US government said it was imposing export controls on the new model, as well as the underlying Mythos model that Fable is based on. Those controls restricted foreign nationals, even those working for Anthropic in the United States, from accessing these models. Anthropic then took Fable and Mythos offline for everyone, because the company said it was worried it would not be able to restrict access and reasonably comply with the order otherwise. As you might imagine, this is all a giant mess. Hayden actually just published a fantastic play-by-play on The Verge about how this all went down last Friday and the scramble through the weekend from both sides to figure out what exactly happened and how it might get resolved. So I wanted her to come on and just...

> AI is pretty reliable at putting things on your calendar these days, but it hasn’t quite cracked answering the related and all-important question of “What should I do this weekend?” Meta’s new AI Mode in search could be a useful tool — if it ever learns to stop getting stuff wrong. AI Mode is a new option when you hit the search bar in the Facebook app. It’s designed to tackle complex queries — much like AI Mode in Google Search. But Meta’s version draws on public posts across Meta apps — including Facebook Groups and Instagram Reels — to inform its results. That could be useful, considering the neighborhood groups and local organizations around me that still use Facebook pretty actively to communicate about upcoming events. But also, “search grounded in stuff people post on Facebook” sounds like a waking nightmare. Have you used Facebook lately? Your weird acquaintance from high school who thinks the Earth is flat has. Meta is pitching the feature as a tool to help you plan trips and find fun things to do, but given the data pool it’s drawing from, that could go south fast. Thankfully, I do have some comforting news: Its...

> As the rest of the country celebrated the USA’s first World Cup win and the New York Knicks championship, Anthropic spent its weekend fighting the Trump administration over its latest model release. At 5:21 PM on Friday, the company received a US export control directive to suspend access to its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 AI models by “any foreign national” inside or outside the US, “including foreign national Anthropic employees.” The only way that was possible, Anthropic determined, was to completely disable products it spent the past week hyping — and travel to Washington, DC in hopes of changing President Donald Trump’s mind. Now, over the coming days, the US government could dramatically alter the trajectory of the entire industry, dealing a major blow to American AI companies. Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5 are built on the same foundation as Anthropic’s Mythos Preview, which Anthropic dubbed too dangerous to publicly release. (The company’s warnings could be seen as genuine concern or more hype for their own model — or both.) Mythos 5 was made available to a select group of government agencies and companies, while Fable 5, which featured additional safeguards, was deemed “safe for general use.” But...

> For all the noise that’s been made about how generative AI is poised to revolutionize the filmmaking industry, there haven’t really been any projects created with the technology that felt like the sort of entertainment people would pay to see. Most AI firms’ video models are still only capable of churning out short bursts of visually inconsistent footage. And some of Hollywood’s biggest AI partnerships have suddenly evaporated in ways that make it seem like studios might not be able to rely on the new technology coming out of Silicon Valley. For the most part, short-form video slop appears to be the only thing that major production houses are capable of cooking up with gen AI. But that could change if studios take notes from some of the experimental projects that debuted at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Though it feels unlikely that gen AI will ever be able to whip up a compelling movie whole cloth, Tribeca featured a number of films that demonstrated how human artists can leverage the technology in compelling ways. While none of the AI-powered movies that screened at Tribeca were as terrible as the video slop companies like OpenAI and xAI have polluted the...

**[Apple's new Siri AI knows when to shut up](https://www.theverge.com/tech/948155/apple-siri-ai-chatbot-personality)**
> Apple’s new Siri AI is finally here, and so far, it seems like it works. I have access and have been messing around with it, and my biggest impression so far is that Siri AI is quite curt — which I mean as a compliment. Many AI chatbots are cheery and wordy. While a more verbose and casual personality can make a chatbot seem friendlier and more fun to talk to, there are instances of users becoming extremely attached to their chatbot of choice. People have fallen in love with chatbots. When OpenAI suddenly shut down GPT-4o, users grieved its loss, and the company brought the model back for paid users. And while some companies have dialed back their AI models’ personalities or given users options for more subdued tones, I still find most AI chatbots to be too talkative and too eager to ask follow-up questions that are clearly designed to push me toward chatting more. With Siri AI, I haven’t run into any of that; it answers the questions I ask, and that’s about it. Out of curiosity, I spent a few minutes comparing responses between the default personalities for Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Siri AI. (Though...

> Parents want one thing, and one thing only, out of AI: to add a list of soccer games or “spirit week” theme days from an email or a poorly formatted flyer onto their calendar in one shot. And I have good news for parents with iPhones — the new Siri can finally do this. After stumbling through its first launch of an AI-imbued Siri, Apple is trying again. The newly upgraded Siri AI can chat with you about what might be killing the roses in your yard, put together a shopping list for the hardware store, and set a reminder to lay down some compost in that flower bed. It can reference information in your email and calendar to make its recommendations or provide an actually helpful answer to the question: “When should I leave for the airport?” And yes, it can even add a list of events from an email to your calendar. I tried all of these scenarios out for myself and I saw it happen. AI Siri is for real this time. But it’s also a pretty basic set of features for an AI assistant in 2026, particularly if you compare it to what Gemini has been...

> At an event in San Francisco today, General Motors made a series of announcements around EV batteries, energy storage, and grid resiliency in the face of growing electricity demand from AI data centers. The automaker announced that it would be activating new vehicle-to-grid capabilities for its current EV and home energy customers. It’s releasing a new commercial energy storage system strategy, anchored by newly developed sodium-ion batteries for industrial-scale grid applications. And it’s launching a new feature for EV owners that it says will help simplify public charging. Right now, millions of EVs are sitting idly in driveways across the country with a wealth of electrons stored in their batteries. GM is betting that even as EV sales cool down, public utilities will want to work with automakers to utilize those EV batteries as a potential solution to the energy demand crisis they face. It was also the latest effort by the largest automaker in North America to grab a piece of the multibillion-dollar energy generation and storage market, which it has been trying to do for nearly four years now. “We see a future where electric vehicles, batteries that power them, and the country’s power grids work together,” GM’s...

> As expected, yesterday’s WWDC keynote was mostly about AI. And also as expected, Apple tried to turn its late arrival into its sales pitch: It didn’t rush into AI because it was taking its time to do things right. In this case, “right” means “with more privacy than anyone else.” It’s a good pitch — the question will be how well it holds up. The new Apple Intelligence features and the updated Siri AI have been designed to work across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro. There’s a dedicated Siri AI app, with a ChatGPT-esque chatbot experience, new AI-powered camera and photo editing features, and the beginnings of an agentic experience that will let Siri AI interact with other apps and software on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. Whatever device you access the new AI from, Apple says the processing will be roughly the same: Queries will be handled on-device where possible and in its secure Private Cloud Compute system when not. Apple says your data won’t be stored, will only be used to execute your request, and won’t be accessible to Apple or anyone else. Conversation logs in the new Siri AI app will be kept, but...

> Apple used to question whether generative AI-powered editing features were worth the risk of distorting our perceptions of the world. Now it seems Apple no longer believes that photos should accurately capture reality. At WWDC 2026, the company announced a host of new AI-powered photo editing tools. They give users effortless powers of manipulating images that Apple still refers to as “photos.” Two years ago, Apple launched Clean Up — an AI-powered object removal tool in Apple’s Photo app that’s similar to the Magic Eraser feature in Google Photos. At the time, Apple software chief Craig Federighi said that it was important for the company to “purvey accurate information, not fantasy.” The company seemed hesitant to provide more extensive AI editing tools, while Google and Samsung charged ahead with editing suites that allow you to add almost anything to photographs by just describing it — including explosions, drug paraphernalia, and other potentially harmful inclusions. Now, Apple is launching its own tools for manipulating photographs using prompt descriptions. An updated version of Image Playground, Apple’s AI app for generating and editing images, notably introduces the ability to generate images in a photorealistic style. Apple says this “offers new powerful ways for...

Of course, we also talked about Microsoft’s relationship with OpenAI, how Mustafa is thinking about all the negative polling and political pushback around AI right now, and whether any of the consumer products are good enough to overcome it. Aside from the occasional bursts of hype, they didn’t seem to change much about the way social media worked. The earliest virtual influencers — Lil Miquela with her blunt fringe and freckles, Imma with her bubblegum pink bob, and Shudu Gram with her flawless complexion — were obviously digital productions. Collaborations were announced with fanfare. Posts required studios, money, coordination, and a lot of polish. Over time, I’ve noticed that the fake people on my timeline have started looking more and more like everyone else on it. Characters like Emily Pellegrini and Aitana Lopez moved a bit closer to reality — or at least to the reality of that well-traveled, well-off friend from college you didn’t keep in touch with, forever posting from nice restaurants and beautiful places, or from Coachella and Wimbledon. Not exactly relatable, but, then again, most professional influencers aren’t either...

> Facebook has long been filled with feeds of clickbait articles. Now, Meta is making its own clickbait articles with AI. The standalone Meta AI app now has a “For You” section that populates a list of clickbait-style stories for you to read. But the topics, images, and text are all AI-generated — and as questionable as you’d expect from AI-created works. The Meta AI app first launched in April 2025 with its focus on a public “Discover” feed that showed AI-generated images and conversations from other users (who frequently seemed unaware that they were being made public). That’s all disappeared. The app now has a standard chatbot interface, plus a For You page that’s been present for at least a few months, displaying a stream of suggested article prompts that, when tapped, generate entire “stories.” When targeting me, a reporter based in London, the prompts were aggressively British, involving topics like tea, manners, pubs, royals, football — sorry, soccer — and, naturally, the art of queuing. Suggested stories included “A royal butler finally settled the milk first debate” (the tea goes first, apparently), “The psychology of joining a queue without knowing why,” “The anatomy of the devastating British tut,” and...

> When Quilty hit the industry trades earlier this year, the AI startup promised that its tool could accurately predict a film’s success just by reading the script. When people actually got a chance to experiment with Quilty’s product, though, they were left skeptical. Even with all the available data in the world, it predicted the script for Christy, which would go on to be a box office flop, would outperform the script for Sinners, which became an Oscar-winning blockbuster. As many AI execs have pitched before, Quilty’s founders believe that can help “democratize” their industry by giving up-and-coming creatives access to assistive tools — a great Quilty score, perhaps, could be an in with a producer, and a low score might be a sign more revisions are needed. But right now, Quilty is little more than a jumbled mishmash of preexisting AI systems, and the company has yet to prove out that its technology has the taste or analytical abilities to identify a future hit (let alone a proven one). Founded by film producers Simon Horsman and Daniel Wood, Quilty uses AI to analyze scripts and generate detailed reports about a project’s chances for success. After being fed an unproduced...

> Amazon’s gaming strategy has never really been clear. It’s been very active in the space: acquiring Twitch, launching its Luna cloud gaming service nearly six years ago, investing heavily in MMOs during the peak of live-service wave, and having access to a huge slate of franchises through Prime Video and the MGM Studios library. Late last year, the company announced a major pivot, relaunching Luna with a focus on party games you can play with just your phone as a controller — including an AI-powered game starring Snoop Dogg as a judge — and basically jumping ship on MMOs. At the time, it looked like a retreat, but Amazon says that isn’t the case. “The reality is nothing could be further from the truth, but we haven’t really got out and said that,” Jeff Gattis, the GM of Amazon Games, tells The Verge. And while the company says it has a new, more focused strategy in place, its gaming efforts are still spread across several different pillars. Part of that newfound focus comes from a structural change, as the company now has what it believes is a simpler approach. “Luna is our gaming platform, Amazon Game Studios is our development...
