The pitch is that the new features bundled with the Pixel 11 series of phones can help fix your relationship with technology — one that Google knows has badly degraded in recent years. But the hardware of the Pixel 11 Pro and 11 Pro XL is very similar to last year’s models — and in at least one case, a downgrade — so those software features are pretty much the entire pitch. Sure, there’s a new satin pyrite case finish, a few new strap colors, and a Steph Curry Special Edition. Under the hood, there’s a slightly faster Qualcomm processor and an itty-bitty battery bump. There’s a $50 price hike from last year, too, because the Pixel Watch 5 isn’t immune to RAMageddon — none of us are. Otherwise, no one would blame you for looking at this watch and thinking absolutely nothing’s changed. That’s because the big updates this year are all software-based. This isn’t a huge surprise considering Google’s Fitbit Air launch in May. And after seeing some Pixel Watch 5 demos, it’s clear this year’s refresh is furthering the AI and proactive health themes that Google introduced earlier this year. Health and fitness features account for the bulk of the updates, but Gemini on the wrist gets a few key improvements. You can now use it offline for simple tasks like starting timers and launching apps. (Though I noticed in my demo it was notably slower when doing this offline.) Google CEO Sundar Pichai posted on X that a billion people are using Gemini every month, and that Gemini is Google’s fastest-growing product ever. A billion users is a huge milestone, but Google isn’t the first AI app to hit it. OpenAI’s ChatGPT hit the mark a few weeks ago, though the company buried the announcement that “more than 1 billion people are putting ChatGPT to work” in an otherwise anodyne blog post about how people use AI. External data suggested ChatGPT crossed 1 billion users as early as this June, but OpenAI hadn’t announced anything until that post on August 6th. OpenAI spokesperson Lindsay McCallum says ChatGPT crossed 1 billion monthly users some time ago, and hit a billion a week in July. The metrics, and the growth they represent, are somewhat complicated here.
