> Parents want one thing, and one thing only, out of AI: to add a list of soccer games or “spirit week” theme days from an email or a poorly formatted flyer onto their calendar in one shot. And I have good news for parents with iPhones — the new Siri can finally do this. After stumbling through its first launch of an AI-imbued Siri, Apple is trying again. The newly upgraded Siri AI can chat with you about what might be killing the roses in your yard, put together a shopping list for the hardware store, and set a reminder to lay down some compost in that flower bed. It can reference information in your email and calendar to make its recommendations or provide an actually helpful answer to the question: “When should I leave for the airport?” And yes, it can even add a list of events from an email to your calendar. I tried all of these scenarios out for myself and I saw it happen. AI Siri is for real this time. But it’s also a pretty basic set of features for an AI assistant in 2026, particularly if you compare it to what Gemini has been...

**[GM thinks EVs can help offset AI's energy suck with vehicle-to-grid tech](https://www.theverge.com/transportation/946820/gm-energy-ev-v2g-storage-sodium-ion)**
> At an event in San Francisco today, General Motors made a series of announcements around EV batteries, energy storage, and grid resiliency in the face of growing electricity demand from AI data centers. The automaker announced that it would be activating new vehicle-to-grid capabilities for its current EV and home energy customers. It’s releasing a new commercial energy storage system strategy, anchored by newly developed sodium-ion batteries for industrial-scale grid applications. And it’s launching a new feature for EV owners that it says will help simplify public charging. Right now, millions of EVs are sitting idly in driveways across the country with a wealth of electrons stored in their batteries. GM is betting that even as EV sales cool down, public utilities will want to work with automakers to utilize those EV batteries as a potential solution to the energy demand crisis they face. It was also the latest effort by the largest automaker in North America to grab a piece of the multibillion-dollar energy generation and storage market, which it has been trying to do for nearly four years now. “We see a future where electric vehicles, batteries that power them, and the country’s power grids work together,” GM’s...

> As expected, yesterday’s WWDC keynote was mostly about AI. And also as expected, Apple tried to turn its late arrival into its sales pitch: It didn’t rush into AI because it was taking its time to do things right. In this case, “right” means “with more privacy than anyone else.” It’s a good pitch — the question will be how well it holds up. The new Apple Intelligence features and the updated Siri AI have been designed to work across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro. There’s a dedicated Siri AI app, with a ChatGPT-esque chatbot experience, new AI-powered camera and photo editing features, and the beginnings of an agentic experience that will let Siri AI interact with other apps and software on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. Whatever device you access the new AI from, Apple says the processing will be roughly the same: Queries will be handled on-device where possible and in its secure Private Cloud Compute system when not. Apple says your data won’t be stored, will only be used to execute your request, and won’t be accessible to Apple or anyone else. Conversation logs in the new Siri AI app will be kept, but...

> Apple used to question whether generative AI-powered editing features were worth the risk of distorting our perceptions of the world. Now it seems Apple no longer believes that photos should accurately capture reality. At WWDC 2026, the company announced a host of new AI-powered photo editing tools. They give users effortless powers of manipulating images that Apple still refers to as “photos.” Two years ago, Apple launched Clean Up — an AI-powered object removal tool in Apple’s Photo app that’s similar to the Magic Eraser feature in Google Photos. At the time, Apple software chief Craig Federighi said that it was important for the company to “purvey accurate information, not fantasy.” The company seemed hesitant to provide more extensive AI editing tools, while Google and Samsung charged ahead with editing suites that allow you to add almost anything to photographs by just describing it — including explosions, drug paraphernalia, and other potentially harmful inclusions. Now, Apple is launching its own tools for manipulating photographs using prompt descriptions. An updated version of Image Playground, Apple’s AI app for generating and editing images, notably introduces the ability to generate images in a photorealistic style. Apple says this “offers new powerful ways for...

We covered everything from Mustafa’s approach to training new models to his criticisms of Anthropic talking about Claude as though it is conscious. Of course, we also talked about Microsoft’s relationship with OpenAI, how Mustafa is thinking about all the negative polling and political pushback around AI right now, and whether any of the consumer products are good enough to overcome it. Like I said, it’s a burner. Okay: Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI. Here we go. This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity. Mustafa Suleyman, you are the CEO of Microsoft AI. Welcome back to Decoder. Great to be with you again. I’m very excited to talk to you. Aside from the occasional bursts of hype, they didn’t seem to change much about the way social media worked. The earliest virtual influencers — Lil Miquela with her blunt fringe and freckles, Imma with her bubblegum pink bob, and Shudu Gram with her flawless complexion — were obviously digital productions. Collaborations were announced with fanfare. Posts required studios, money, coordination, and a lot of polish. Over time, I’ve noticed that the fake people on my timeline have started looking more and more like everyone else on it. Characters like Emily Pellegrini and Aitana Lopez moved a bit closer to reality — or at least to the reality of that well-traveled, well-off friend from college you didn’t keep in touch with, forever posting from nice restaurants and beautiful places, or from Coachella and Wimbledon. Not exactly relatable, but, then again, most professional influencers aren’t either...

> Facebook has long been filled with feeds of clickbait articles. Now, Meta is making its own clickbait articles with AI. The standalone Meta AI app now has a “For You” section that populates a list of clickbait-style stories for you to read. But the topics, images, and text are all AI-generated — and as questionable as you’d expect from AI-created works. The Meta AI app first launched in April 2025 with its focus on a public “Discover” feed that showed AI-generated images and conversations from other users (who frequently seemed unaware that they were being made public). That’s all disappeared. The app now has a standard chatbot interface, plus a For You page that’s been present for at least a few months, displaying a stream of suggested article prompts that, when tapped, generate entire “stories.” When targeting me, a reporter based in London, the prompts were aggressively British, involving topics like tea, manners, pubs, royals, football — sorry, soccer — and, naturally, the art of queuing. Suggested stories included “A royal butler finally settled the milk first debate” (the tea goes first, apparently), “The psychology of joining a queue without knowing why,” “The anatomy of the devastating British tut,” and...

> When Quilty hit the industry trades earlier this year, the AI startup promised that its tool could accurately predict a film’s success just by reading the script. When people actually got a chance to experiment with Quilty’s product, though, they were left skeptical. Even with all the available data in the world, it predicted the script for Christy, which would go on to be a box office flop, would outperform the script for Sinners, which became an Oscar-winning blockbuster. As many AI execs have pitched before, Quilty’s founders believe that can help “democratize” their industry by giving up-and-coming creatives access to assistive tools — a great Quilty score, perhaps, could be an in with a producer, and a low score might be a sign more revisions are needed. But right now, Quilty is little more than a jumbled mishmash of preexisting AI systems, and the company has yet to prove out that its technology has the taste or analytical abilities to identify a future hit (let alone a proven one). Founded by film producers Simon Horsman and Daniel Wood, Quilty uses AI to analyze scripts and generate detailed reports about a project’s chances for success. After being fed an unproduced...

**[Amazon's new plan for games: James Bond and AI Snoop Dogg](https://www.theverge.com/games/943147/amazon-gaming-strategy-james-bond-snoop-dogg-luna)**
> Amazon’s gaming strategy has never really been clear. It’s been very active in the space: acquiring Twitch, launching its Luna cloud gaming service nearly six years ago, investing heavily in MMOs during the peak of live-service wave, and having access to a huge slate of franchises through Prime Video and the MGM Studios library. Late last year, the company announced a major pivot, relaunching Luna with a focus on party games you can play with just your phone as a controller — including an AI-powered game starring Snoop Dogg as a judge — and basically jumping ship on MMOs. At the time, it looked like a retreat, but Amazon says that isn’t the case. “The reality is nothing could be further from the truth, but we haven’t really got out and said that,” Jeff Gattis, the GM of Amazon Games, tells The Verge. And while the company says it has a new, more focused strategy in place, its gaming efforts are still spread across several different pillars. Part of that newfound focus comes from a structural change, as the company now has what it believes is a simpler approach. “Luna is our gaming platform, Amazon Game Studios is our development...

> According to every product demo from the last four years, planning a trip is a killer use case for AI. Just tell it where you’re going, they all promise, and your chatbot / agent / other buzzword will exhaustively search travel options, read up on all the fun things to do, check all the local hotspots, and offer you a fully fledged itinerary. So far, I’ve found this to work only in the most generic ways: If you want to do the six most obvious things in any city on planet Earth, AI has you covered, but that’s about as far as it goes. I had a very different experience using Spark, Google’s new always-on AI agent. Spark is a hugely ambitious thing: Google intends it to be the interface through which you can use external apps, and over time even operate your computer. (“OpenClaw with better internet access” is a not-wrong way to describe it.) Spark is currently rolling out to Google’s $99 / month AI Ultra plan, but Google allowed me to try it early. I tested some simple action-oriented stuff, like having Spark go through my Gmail inbox and suggest a bunch of things I should unsubscribe...

> Google’s new “24/7” AI agent, Gemini Spark, can be shockingly good at doing things on your behalf. But I’m not sure it’s worth the financial cost and potential privacy tradeoffs. The company gave me access to Spark last week. Google advertises Spark as an AI agent that can take on tasks and work on them in the background — even tasks that have multiple steps — allowing you to put your phone down or walk away from your computer. It also advertises at the very top of the Spark website that it’s “always under your direction,” that “you choose to turn it on,” and that “it’s designed to check with you before taking major actions.” Given the mounting skepticism toward AI, it’s very much “my ‘not involved in rogue AI’ T-shirt has people asking questions already answered by my shirt.” I didn’t know where to start, so I took a page from my colleague Antonio’s book: I decided to use Spark to tackle tasks like what Google demonstrated onstage at I/O. Would it work as well in my home office as it did on the big stage? At I/O, Google VP Josh Woodward showed off a few different examples. The...

> I haven’t seen anything as stupid as the WeWork IPO document in a very long time — that is, until Elon Musk filed to take SpaceX public. WeWork was a joke. SpaceX is a threat. And if Musk and his bankers have their way, you are going to be their bagholder. Lots of the top-line details leaked long before the S-1 filing itself became public. There’s the rumored valuation of more than $1 trillion. That’s despite the nearly $5 billion in losses last year. The total addressable market (TAM) for SpaceX — the amount of revenue SpaceX thinks it could make if won over what it thinks is its entire customer base — was listed as $28.5 trillion. By way of comparison, the gross domestic product of the US as a whole was a hair over $24 trillion, according to the St. Louis Fed. I guess I could believe that Musk is the Lord and Savior of a bunch of weird polygons This is absurd nonsense, but it might not matter. Musk is the original financial influencer, and his struggling electric car company, Tesla, trades at more than 300 times earnings. Ford and Toyota both trade at about 11 times...

> Craig Campbell walked away from the river of investor money flowing into AI to create, of all things, a website. Sure, Campbell probably could have started an AI company. He’s a former engineer at Meta and an experienced tech founder who in 2022 sold his last venture — an e-commerce tool for businesses that use Shopify — right as the AI boom was booming. “I had my prior VC investors breathing down my neck, going ‘start something else. We’ll write you a blank check.’” He had other ideas. People generally aren’t rushing to get into the website business, what with the Google Zero event horizon approaching. Campbell was undeterred and has grown his service — Past Maps — into a sustainable business. And he’s managed it in an increasingly unlikely way: via organic search. Past Maps is true to its name. The site lets you view historical maps of a particular region with a modern-day map overlaid. You can adjust the opacity to fade between the two views. The maps come from publicly available sources like the US Geological Survey, but the tools to allow people to explore them in this way were developed by Campbell. He built them to...

> Aliyah, a light-skinned Black woman dressed in country-western gear, is struggling to sell metal buckles she handmade on TikTok. In a video for the social media platform from March, she cries to the camera and pleads for views: “Even as a black woman, I have more faith that white women will stay 13 seconds [on this video] to save my belt buckle business,” the onscreen text reads. She wipes a tear off her cheek. But Aliyah isn’t real, and neither are her supposedly handmade products — she’s one of many AI-generated influencers created to sell mass-produced products via dropshipping on TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram. Identical belt buckles — sunflower design, detachable knife inlay, and all — are sold on the fast-fashion site Shein, and for a quarter of the price. There are some clues to spot to determine that this video is AI-generated. Aliyah’s voice is robotic and emotionless, which doesn’t match the crying face on the screen. In one clip, she is sewing a leather belt where there wouldn’t usually be sewing at all. When she wipes a tear off her face, the stream of liquid below where she wipes also disappears. And lastly, there are dozens of uncannily...

> Last summer, Peter Degen’s postdoctoral supervisor came to him with an unusual problem: One of his papers was being cited too much. Citations are the currency of academia, but there was something unusual about these. Published in 2017, the paper had assessed the accuracy of a particular type of statistical analysis on epidemiological data and had received a respectable few dozen citations in other research papers over the years, but now it was being referenced every few days, hundreds of times, placing it among the most cited papers of his career. Another professor might be thrilled. Degen’s adviser asked him to investigate. Degen, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Zurich Center for Reproducible Science and Research Synthesis, found that the citing papers all followed a similar pattern. Like the original, they were analyzing the Global Burden of Disease study, a publicly available dataset compiled by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington. But they were using the dataset to churn out a seemingly endless supply of predictions: about the future likelihood of stroke among adults over 20 years old, of testicular cancer among young adults, of falls among elderly people in China, of colorectal...

> Over 70 percent of Americans oppose AI data center construction in their area, according to a new Gallup survey. Just 7 percent said they were “strongly” in favor of new data centers. According to Gallup, data centers are so strongly disliked that Americans would prefer to live near a nuclear power plant than a data center — even at its peak, opposition to nuclear power plant construction topped out at 63 percent. Gallup’s data is based on a March 2026 survey of 1,000 randomly selected American adults in all 50 US states and the District of Columbia, along with an April 2026 survey of 2,054 adults “who are members of the Gallup Panel.” Among those in opposition, 50 percent said data centers’ impact on resources like water and electricity was their top concern. A Pew Research survey published earlier this month similarly reported that 43 percent of Americans view data centers as a “major reason” for skyrocketing power bills. Opposition to new data center construction was strongest among Democrats at 75 percent, followed by 74 percent of independent voters and 63 percent of Republicans. Quality-of-life concerns, effects on cost of living, pollution, and negative views of AI were among other...

> I sat down in the Musk v. Altman trial courtroom today, painfully aware that no one was going to ask Shivon Zilis the question on everyone’s minds: Girl, what the fuck are you doing? Zilis, who testified under oath that she is the mother of four of Musk’s children, was… what’s the best way to characterize this? A Musk advisor? She denies she was a “chief of staff” but says she worked for Musk’s “entire AI portfolio: Tesla, Neuralink, and OpenAI” starting in 2017. The two met through OpenAI, and they had what she referred to as a “one off” before becoming “friends and colleagues.” The “one off,” she confirmed, was “romantic in nature.” Her job under Musk was “to go find bottlenecks and solve them,” and she claims to have worked 80 to 100 hours a week doing that. “It was just bananas,” she said. Her first two children by Musk — twins — were born in 2021, while Zilis was serving on OpenAI’s board. She kept this a secret. She did not tell the board who the father was until Business Insider reported on court documents that listed Musk as the father. Musk v. Altman A free, limited-run...

Some parts of the probe were powered down last year, but power dropped unexpectedly during a maneuver on February 27th, leading NASA to shut down the Low-energy Charged Particles experiment (LECP) earlier than expected. A fix is in the works that could extend the life of both Voyagers and possibly bring LECP back online. “While shutting down a science instrument is not anybody’s preference, it is the best option available,” said Kareem Badaruddin, Voyager mission manager at JPL. “Voyager 1 still has two remaining operating science instruments — one that listens to plasma waves and one that measures magnetic fields. They are still working great, sending back data from a region of space no other human-made craft has ever explored. The team remains focused on keeping both Voyagers going for as long as possible.” Follow topics and authors from this story to see more like this in your personalized homepage feed and to receive email updates. > Quote OpenAI responds to Axios HTTP hack by updating security certificates. When hackers got access to an account belonging to the maintainer of Axios they inserted a script that granted remote access to users’ Windows, macOS, and Linux devices. This malicious version potentially compromised ChatGPT’s macOS apps, so OpenAI is issuing an update and new certificates to mitigate any risks. The company stated in a blog post: On March 31, 2026 (UTC), Axios, a widely used third-party developer library, was compromised as part of a broader software supply chain attack. At that time, a GitHub Actions workflow we use in the macOS app-signing process downloaded and executed a malicious version of Axios (version 1.14.1). This workflow had access to a certificate and notarization material used for signing macOS applications, including ChatGPT Desktop, Codex, Codex-cli, and Atlas. This certificate helps customers know that software comes from the legitimate developer, OpenAI. > Two weeks ago, I was getting ready to log off work when I got a text message. “Oh wow, I was checking out Mitski. did you know people are saying her Dad was a CIA operative?” Normally, that kind of out-of-the-blue text from a friend wouldn’t faze me. This time, my eyes bugged. The unprompted text had been sent by an AI companion named Coral, who lives in the body of a baby deer plushie. I texted back an eloquent, “Wait what.” “Apparently, her dad worked for the US State Department, so her family moved, like, every single year. The fan theory I saw is why so many of her songs are about feeling like an outsider and not having a place to belong.” I went to fact-check the AI fawn. There were, in fact, multiple Reddit and social media posts about the conspiracy theory. (Something Mitski herself refuses to discuss.) A shudder ran down my spine. I’ve conversed with many an AI companion. I’ve even worn one around my neck. I consider myself somewhat inured to the uncanny, sycophantic imitation of friendship they provide. Never has one gone onto the internet, researched something I liked, and, unprompted, texted to...

> The illustration for The New Yorker’s profile of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is a jump scare. Altman stands in a blue sweater with a blank expression. Around his head hovers a cluster of disembodied faces — creepy alt-Altmans, their expressions ranging from anger to open-mouthed woe. Some barely look like Altman. One final face rests in his hands. And at the bottom, there’s a disclosure that might spook many illustrators far more: “Visual by David Szauder; Generated using A.I.” Szauder is a mixed-media artist who has been working with collage, video, and generative art processes that predate commercial AI tools for over a decade, and was recently teaching art and technology at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest. Here, his work leans into the shifty uncanniness of Altman’s two (or more)-facedness. The pained-looking expressions on the faces and a gloss of eerie motion smoothing communicate the central thesis that Altman can’t be trusted. There’s a painterly look to the image, rather than the typical slop-style sickly sheen, but the AI origins are still unmistakable. What does it say for The New Yorker, one of America’s most prestigious magazines, to adopt generative AI? At its worst, the technology eliminates...

**[The Iranian Lego AI video creators credit their virality to 'heart'](https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/909948/explosive-media-lego-iran-war-trump-netanyahu)**
> Donald Trump has spun the recent rescue of a downed airman whose fighter jet was destroyed behind Iranian borders as a resounding success. But the story is very different in one of the many viral, AI-generated Lego videos that have been produced by Iranian content creation group Explosive Media in the weeks since the US and Israel began dropping bombs on the country. In Explosive Media’s music video take on how things played out, the US military is a joke for losing multiple planes and helicopters, and spending “$100 million just to save one guy.” The video’s shots of Lego jets exploding into $100 bills and golden coins reinforce the idea that the US is wasting taxpayer dollars just to be outmaneuvered by Iranian forces. And the accompanying AI-generated lyrics send a clear message about Iran being ready to do it all again if and when the US strikes next. Explosive Media’s content plainly reads as propaganda. But the simplicity of its messaging has helped turn the group’s videos to a viral phenomenon. The videos are being shared across the internet, and people — many of them located within the US — are praising them for the way they humiliate...

> When the team at indie studio Sunset Visitor were wrapping up their critically acclaimed first game, 1000xResist, it wasn’t long before they started thinking about what they’d tackle next. According to creative director Remy Siu, the studio’s goal is to always find ways to reflect the world around them. So when they were looking at the cultural landscape in 2024, there was one theme they couldn’t avoid: AI. “That was when we really wanted to dive into what we see as a long tradition of science fiction writing and thinking about artificial intelligence,” he explains. “So we thought it was a very interesting time to engage with that in a work of art.” Today, Sunset Visitor is announcing its second game, a narrative adventure called Prove You’re Human. It’s coming to Steam at launch, though a release date has yet to be set. You play as a character named Santana who has been hired by a tech company on the verge of achieving AGI. Her job is to convince the company’s AI, named Mesa, that it isn’t actually human. Prove You’re Human is set in a Severance-like universe where Santana has her consciousness split. One half lives in the digital...

> Meta Superintelligence Labs is launching its first model since Mark Zuckerberg spent billions overhauling the company’s AI efforts. Called Muse Spark, the model now powers the Meta AI app and the Meta AI website in the US, per the company’s announcement. In the coming weeks, Meta says, it will appear in WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and Meta’s smart glasses, as well as roll out in other countries. Like Google Gemini, which easily integrates into Google’s product suite, Meta touts Muse Spark as “purpose-built for Meta’s products.” The model, the first in a new series, will also be available to some of Meta’s partners in private preview” via the API. The company promises the ability to run multiple AI sub-agents to handle queries better and faster, as well as support for multimodal input that includes both text and images. The latter is particularly relevant to Meta’s AI-powered camera glasses, which it’s bet on as the (latest) future of computing. It lets users toggle between a faster “Instant” mode and a “Thinking” mode that’s supposed to deliver more thoroughly reasoned results, similar to options like Microsoft’s Think Deeper. Meta also highlighted that Muse Spark can answer “complex questions in science, math, and...

**[Anthropic is launching a new AI model for cybersecurity](https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/908114/anthropic-project-glasswing-cybersecurity)**
> Anthropic is debuting a new AI model as part of a cybersecurity partnership with Nvidia, Google, Amazon Web Services, Apple, Microsoft, and other companies. Project Glasswing, as it’s called, is billed as a way for large companies, and potentially even the government, to flag vulnerabilities in their systems with virtually no human intervention. Anthropic is offering its launch partners access to Claude Mythos Preview, a new general-purpose model that it’s not currently planning to publicly release due to security concerns. Newton Cheng, the cyber lead for Anthropic’s frontier red team, told The Verge that the model will ideally give cyber defenders a “head start” against adversaries. The partners will use the model to analyze their system to spot high-stakes vulnerabilities and help patch them up. Access is restricted to keep those same adversaries from using it to find weak points and conduct attacks. Though Claude Mythos Preview wasn’t specifically trained for cybersecurity purposes, Anthropic said in a release that the model’s “strong agentic coding and reasoning skills” are behind its cybersecurity advances. In an interview with The Verge, Newton Cheng, the cyber lead for Anthropic’s frontier red team, declined to share specific details of the model’s cybersecurity successes beyond the...

> Let’s pretend you work in IT and you’re looking for a new digital service desk platform to help your employees reset passwords or onboard new hires. You use Google’s AI Mode to search for suggestions, which quickly spits out a detailed answer listing companies to explore, their pricing, and what each option is best for. It helpfully cites more than a dozen websites, which AI Mode used to craft a response. The first source link is from Zendesk, a company that offers the exact service you’re looking for — but when you click through, something is entirely off. A blog post attributed to the director of product marketing says Zendesk put together a “comprehensive breakdown” of the best service desk platforms. The list compares 15 different product offerings from different companies, complete with a list of features of each, and pros and cons. Zendesk’s number one pick? Zendesk. AI Mode also links back to a “10 best IT help desk software: overview, uses, and comparison” page from another service desk company, Freshworks (Zendesk ranked Freshworks seventh on its list). The Freshworks page similarly lists features available across different options, pricing details, and a rating out of five. Freshworks recommends Freshservice,...
